LaMSA is one of the National Member Organizations of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA). IFMSA is an organization for medical students founded in 1951. For more than 60 years, IFMSA has represented and united medical students worldwide. It is one of the largest youth organizations in the world and is a partner to the World Health Organization and United Nations, and regularly participates in their work and has an active influence in decision-making. IFMSA also participates in questions such as the development and adoption of the new United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Currently, the Federation unites 127 national medical student associations from 119 countries on six continents with more than 1.3 million members.

Member organizations, including LaMSA, meet regularly at the IFMSA General Assembly, one of the largest youth events in the world. It is held twice a year, in March and August, bringing together over 800 students from around 100 countries worldwide. The General Assembly’s mission is to inspire the next generation of medical professionals to become leaders and network with prospective colleagues in other parts of the world. In assemblies, delegates agree on the common views of medical student organizations through the issuing of Policy Statements. In 2016, LaMSA and CromSIC (Croatia) Declaration of Action on Vaccination was also supported by the IFMSA Common Position.

During these meetings, student representatives attend workshops, exchange their recent experiences, participate in training sessions for personal and organizational capacity building, and acquire skills to train their colleagues on these and other issues. Delegates also learn about other countries’ practices in medical education and public health projects, and contract with member organizations in other countries for professional and scientific exchanges.

The European Regional Meeting, or EuRegMe, is an annual meeting of members of national associations in Europe, bringing together 300 students in a European city in the spring. The purpose of the regional meeting is to educate medical students on global health and international health policy by inviting emerging physicians to take an active role in these issues and conveying this message to the members of national associations.
